MOMA Semantic Framework
Making the management of information assets more effective and efficient is today's main challenge for businesses defined as "Knowledge Intensive Organisation", whatever their field of interest and market sector (telecommunications, energy, publishing and media, manufacturing, retail, finance, public administration, etc.).
MOMA Semantic Framework (MSF) provides an array of tools and features with high ductility for the creation of ad hoc innovative solutions tailored to business processes where the following are key factors:
- optimal management of huge amount of data coming from heterogeneous information sources;
- intelligent search of information, to be enabled according to specific user profiles.
The use of tools made available in MSF for the conceptualization, classification and semantic research allow, in accordance with given vertical solutions, to enhance business processes based on systems of enterprise management such as CRM, ERP and troubleshooting.
An example of MSF application may refer to the efficiency boosting of service desk processes. The introduction of semantic technologies makes possible the evolution of applications in use for the incident management process, and consequently impacts in terms of increased service productivity and efficiency, of reduction of intervention time and costs and, more generally, of enhancement of service quality perceived by users.
Another case of MSF application, referred to the Document Management System area, sees the introduction of semantic technologies for:
- providing an integrated view of documentary archives, also when distributed in clouds;
- automating classification of documents for improving user' search operations;
- supporting users in the production of documents, improving workflow efficiency through suggestion of documents where similar information can be found, receiving tips on topic sentences.
MSF and its continuous evolution stems from the experience of a Research and Development team exploiting innovative technologies and features of the semantic web. Distinguishing factors are the advanced use of triple store and languages for ontological modeling (definition of OWL, RDF Schemes, etc.) enabling knowledge organization and information access thanks to intelligent search techniques that support similarity, question answering, faceted browsing.
MSF has been developed within Aristotele project, co-funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme.
MOMA Semantic Framework functionalities
Key functionalities of MSF allow:
- classification of heterogeneous textual sources (Word documents, PDF, XML, database, etc.) compared to knowledge representation of the domain of interest (for example achievable through taxonomies);
- conceptualization of available documentary repositories, with extraction of concepts and relations from heterogeneous textual sources;
- semantic search of information and resources through queries in natural language and evaluation of semantic similarity between their content and the content available within the managed document repositories.

MOMA Semantic Framework architecture
The modular and flexible architecture underlying MSF helps customize available functionalities basing on specific needs of the domain of interest. MSF can be used as a "tool box" through which to implement stand-alone vertical solutions or extensions of existing systems.
MSF has an extensive set of semantic APIs distributed according to widely used protocols, such as REST and JSON, and service-oriented standards independent from a specific platform, which allow you to access and integrate the semantic functionalities within other systems and in the development of other innovative applications.

In the context of technologies for learning & collaboration, we carry out research lines with a view to disseminate technologies, models and methodologies that innovate both teaching and learning processes: tools for personalized and adaptive learning, simulation techniques, personal and social workplaces, community and social networking for knowledge sharing, collaborative solutions for the implementation of complex projects.
In the context of technologies for Human Resource Management, we work on themes focused on defining models, methods and systems based on corporate and worker skills: the use of algorithms and techniques for automatic extraction and semantic inferences of undeclared skills, integrated solutions for recruiting, training and matching between labour demand and supply to the end of employability, solutions for team building, competence gap and advanced enterprise resources searching.
In the context of semantic technologies, we have matured a strong expertise in numerous projects concerned with models and systems for virtual organizations and extended enterprise, models and solutions supporting knowledge sharing, smart tagging, expert finding, systems and techniques for discovery, extraction, classification, representation, management and sharing of tacit and explicit corporate knowledge, search techniques like natural language query, question answering, faceted browsing and document similarity, Google Search Appliance Enhancement.

ARISTOTELE - Personalized Learning & Collaborative Working Environments Fostering Social Creativity and Innovation Inside the Organizations (2010-2013)
Analysis, design and development of Models, Methodologies and innovative Technologies supporting the acquisition and sharing of information and knowledge among individuals involved in corporate processes, in order to implement a new way of conceiving relationships inside the so-called "knowledge intensive" organizations.
ALICE - Adaptive Learning via Intuitive/Interactive, Collaborative and Emotional system (2010-2012)
ICT-2009.4.2: Technology-Enhanced Learning
Definition, implementation and experimentation of an innovative and engaging e-learning environment able to combine customization, simulations, storytelling, collaboration and assessment with emotional and affective aspects.
SIRET - Integrated system for Recruitment and Training (2007-2013)
Prototype creation of an integrated system for recruitment and training allowing to effectively represent professional competence and skills and to interpret labour supply and demand in order to optimize recruiting, training and employment actions in general.
TITAN - System for Electronic Money and Multichannel Value-Added Services (2007-2013)
Definition of an innovative platform for the electronic money which integrates different payment mechanisms (electronic) and value added services. The project focuses on the capability of reaching the users via multichannel system and especially via mobile devices with a high interface usability. The project vision is also based on the definition of a semantic framework , for the composition and context-aware discovery of services and cloud deployment.
Automotive Enterprise 2.0 - Methodology and Social Semantic Techniques for the Automotive sector (2007-2013)
Definition of an innovative approach to exploit methodologies and frontier technologies which are contributing to the vision of Web and Enterprise 2.0. The project envisages the definition of new and enabling methodologies, techniques and technologies to manage knowledge and competences distributed over corporate social networks with the aim to capitalize the enterprise intangible assets value (ideas, lessons learned, experiences, knowledge, attitudes , skills). Through Automotive scenarios will be carried out a validation of results from the performed research activity.

Scope of the project is to define and validate a model for the cultural remediation proposing innovative methodologies, techniques and prototypes for the generation of customized and adaptive use experiences of cultural heritage assets in real and virtual contexts. The experimentation conducted by MOMA on standard link discovery frameworks and the in-house framework personalization called MOMA LDF, have allowed to implement useful services for the remediation support within the FIBAC project.
Digicult – Valorization of distributed Cultural Heritage assets

Scope of the project is the valorization of distributed cultural heritage assets through innovative models, methodologies and prototypes along with typical features of a Destination Management System (DMS), advanced mechanisms for the geo-referenced management and personalized itinerary planning. Within the project MOMA has defined an ontological model and knowledge base schema, providing the final output in the RDF/OWL format.
Modern – Architectural models for the Definition, Execution and Reconfiguration of User – Centric Processes in Enterprise 2.0.
The project aims at the definition of architectural solutions (according to the Enterprise 2.0 paradigm) enabling the execution and reconfiguration of user-centric processes, methodologies and techniques for the knowledge sharing and collaboration in the Open Enterprise and in the prototypes of defined architectural solutions. MOMA has conducted activities related to the identification of techniques of knowledge extraction from data, especially from social tools, and semantically linked resources for the design and development of advanced solutions in the Enterprise 2.0, for the innovation of processes and the simplification of services supply. It has included the creation of an advanced demonstrator for the ontological matching.
SAT – Advanced Traceability System
The project aims at defining new scientific and technological approaches based on distributed cooperative sensor networks and ubiquitous computing able to satisfy specific needs of traceability systems in the supply / productive chain, and also to integrate it with ubiquitous cooperative services having an added value. MOMA has conducted research activities linked to the supervision, coordination, monitoring and validation of the traceability models, the design of platform prototypes and the definition of the final implementation of crucial components.
SIFOL – Supply Chain Information System for the optimization of Logistics
Scope of the project is to define and develop a web-based optimization system able to model, simulate and optimize the main standard activities inside a productive system. This system will allow to identify possible anomalies in productive chains like bullwhip effects and reconfigure the whole chain to reduce costs and increase profits. MOMA has conducted research activities linked with supervision, coordination, monitoring and validation of simulation models for the goods loading and optimal pathways; the implementation of methodologies for the optimization of productive process, warehouses dislocation, identification of intermediate loading and unloading areas, transport and fleet management and so on.
Technology 4 Teacher
Technology 4 Teacher (T4T) is a web-based personal and collaborative environment supporting school teachers' work.
Usage examples can be found in educational contexts, especially in initiatives promoted by the Ministry of Education, also involving various institutes, such as universities and schools for them to work synergically on common themes and with different levels of contribution.
T4T allows you to:
- annotate, store, search and share documents and content easily and effectively;
- receive, organize and aggregate information of interest from external sites (e.g. blogs, discussion forums, online newspapers);
- manage and share your profile (public and private) as a part of teachers' social network, including information about your curriculum vitae and teaching activities;
- use of co-editing tools to work collaboratively on their documents and export them to more common file formats (.doc, .docx and .pdf);
- participate in discussion forums within teachers community and enable communication sessions between colleagues.
Workflow & Project
Workflow & Project (WP) is an application for the management of collaborative work and governance of business projects. Application examples can be found in the context of R & D projects where the support of a single dashboard for managing and monitoring work groups and tasks is especially useful for an efficient governance of the process workflow.
The application can be easily extensible and configurable using templates to easily provide for the management of other types of software development projects in PA.
This solution has been implemented by Aristotele project under the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission.
